Voice Index Analysis

Jeanie LoVetri’s proprietary rating system to evaluate actors and the demands of a show’s vocal score

The Voice Index Analysis (V.I.A.) was developed by Jeanie LoVetri for the Actor’s Equity Association in 1999 as a part of the Equity Smoke Study (Section III, Page 5). The study examined vocal function, vocal health, physical/vocal stamina, and the measurement of role demands against each performer’s training ability and life experience.

During this study, Jeanie developed a proprietary rating system to evaluate actors and the demands of a show’s vocal score. This new approach helps to maximize a casting director’s evaluation of candidates being considered for specific roles in any given show, or problem solve a role that is causing an actor to struggle vocally.

Voice Index Analysis for Music Theater consulting by Jeanie LoVetri

The Voice Index Analysis supplements the traditional system of listening to a singer to decide who is the best candidate for a particular role. Instead, the V.I.A. evaluates the singer with multiple parameters that minimize the potential for vocal health problems and maximizes an optimal match between the singer’s voice and the demands of the role. This ultimately saves valuable money and resources.

Voice Index Analysis in detail

During the “Callbacks Evaluation”, Jeanie sits in with the casting team during callbacks and provide her specific expert feedback of each performer’s vocal ability and technique. Her basis for each evaluation provides the team with valuable insight on each performer’s ability to execute the vocal demands of the character, as well as their likelihood of lasting longevity and vocal health in the role.

Throughout the “Final Callbacks”, Jeanie evaluates actors being considered and provide a written vocal overview for the production team. The higher the performer’s individual score, the more vocally fit they are for the role.

After the cast has been chosen, Jeanie is available to work with individual cast members to develop a specific practice regime to maximize vocal proficiency. This regime will include recommendations for vocal/physical health and exercises, and to correct/compensate for vocal problems/challenges (if necessary).

If, during the Voice Index Analysis, a singer is suspected of having vocal health problems, Jeanie refers to experienced laryngologists (throat specialists) or other vocal health experts to help correct any possible problems.

6-Step Methodology:

  1. Meet with the casting team to obtain the show parameters (who’s singing what)
  2. Obtain and evaluate the score for range, style, age range, orchestration and sound design
  3. Discuss pitch range parameters of each character
  4. Dissect the overriding style of the production and individual songs
  5. Provide specific feedback during and after callbacks
  6. Provide a comprehensive picture of each performer’s overall vocal abilities.
